India is the world’s largest milk producer and a leader in the global dairy industry. However, it faces several challenges. Sidhant Gupta, a well-known expert in the dairy sector and former Director of Kwality Ltd., sheds light on the hurdles and opportunities in India’s dairy industry.
“India contributes nearly 22% of the world’s milk, with over 70 million dairy farmers playing a key role in this massive output. Yet, the industry remains mostly unorganized, with traditional farming methods still widely used,” says Mr. Gupta.
India’s large-scale milk production is both a strength and a challenge. On the positive side, it ensures self-sufficiency and gives the country the potential to lead in global dairy exports. On the other hand, the industry’s fragmented structure—dominated by small farmers—makes it hard to bring about large-scale improvements. This fragmentation creates obstacles to adopting advanced technologies, modernizing infrastructure, and ensuring consistent quality. These improvements are crucial for the industry’s growth and global competitiveness.
